How to Set Up PSD Mockup Templates for Batch Processing
Preparing Your PSD Mockups for Bulk Automation
To run automated bulk mockup campaigns, you need mockup templates that are designed to handle automation engines. While standard mockup files from platforms like Creative Market are high-quality, they are often organized in highly chaotic ways. Layers may be named arbitrarily, and smart objects might have mismatched canvas proportions.
By organizing your mockup library correctly, you can ensure that automated tools like MockupMax can detect layers, replace objects, and output natural-looking product photos at lightning speeds.
Step 1: Standardize Your Smart Object Naming
Mockup batch tools locate the placement layer in your PSD file by searching for specific names. Standardize the main Smart Object layer name across all your mockup files. For example, use names like YOUR_DESIGN_HERE or PLACE_GRAPHIC.
Having a single, consistent name across your entire library allows you to configure your batch run once, instead of mapping custom layer names for every single template.
Step 2: Align Smart Object Canvas Proportions
A common mistake is placing a square design inside a smart object canvas that has a vertical rectangular aspect ratio. When replacing files, this causes unexpected crops or blank spaces.
- Determine the primary aspect ratio of your graphics (e.g. 1:1 square for mug prints, or 4:5 for framed posters).
- Make sure the nested canvas of your Smart Object (the PSB file) shares this same aspect ratio.
- Understand the differences in scaling by reading our deep dive on Mockup Resize Modes (Fit vs Fill vs Stretch).
Step 3: Setup Displacement Maps for Perfect Wrinkles
Flat designs placed on wrinkled t-shirts look obviously fake. A **Displacement Map** takes the shadow/texture data of a fabric photo and mathematically distorts the design to match those contours.
- Create a high-contrast grayscale version of your background product image.
- Apply a slight Gaussian Blur to smooth out pixel noise, and save it as a separate
.psdfile (e.g.,displace-map.psd). - In your main template, select your Smart Object layer and go to Filter > Distort > Displace. Link the map file.
Now, whenever an automated engine batch replaces the design, Photoshop automatically re-applies the displacement warp to the new file, maintaining realistic fabric wrinkles.
Step 4: Organize Color-Change and Lighting Layers
Keep your layers neatly grouped so your design doesn't wash out. Ensure your PSD template is structured as follows:
- Top Group (Highlights & Shadows): Set to "Multiply" or "Linear Burn" for shadows, and "Screen" or "Linear Dodge" for highlights. This ensures realistic lights drape over your design.
- Middle Layer (Your Smart Object): The standardized placement layer.
- Bottom Group (Background & Color Change): Layers to change the shirt fabric color or background scenery.
By preparing a clean print on demand mockup template library following these four rules, you set the foundation for a flawless, high-speed automated business model.
